van Dyk Gallery

  • Russell Hamilton

My work has passed from colorful, high-energy evocations of desert mysteries, through the more introspective “yard series” into the current theme of valleys and streams in the high country. Each period is connected by certain pictorial and conceptual elements. I do not work from specific field sketches or photographs as my intent is not to portray a locale but to capture a slice of the perceptual intensity by allowing the filter of memory to establish the significant features.

The image is approached first as a composition of abstract relations. Color may range from unreal saturation to local color subtlety. While moving toward a preconceived vision I open myself to new ideas that may be revealed through the working process. Thus, I am not restricted by the peculiarities of a site but proceed as I would fish a stream, engaging each turn according to how it speaks to me. The result is a body of work created on my own terms and to my personal expectations and aesthetic.
